Common Questions (FAQ)

We inspire donors to live and give generously by investing their gifts as a resource for transformation in Greater Milwaukee Synod, ELCA ministries, serving communities of poverty.

The Greater Milwaukee Synod is committed to remain as a ministry presence to areas of poverty within the Synod.  Outreach for Hope came into being in 1995 by action of the Synod Assembly, to strengthen financial support for congregation-based ministries among the poor, located within the Synod.  The focus is on congregations that bring people into community around the Word of God and the Sacraments.

New and established ministries within the Great Milwaukee Synod, ELCA which focus their ministry in low income communities are eligible for Outreach for Hope grants.  Applicants are expected to have a ministry plan that draws on the worshiping community to be part of a transformation process in the lives of the people, households, and neighborhoods that are faced with the challenges of poverty.

Those planning to submit an application for the first time are encouraged to contact the Executive Director of Outreach for Hope early in their preparation process. Currently Outreach for Hope is distributing funds on a two year cycle. Applications are to be written in a prescribed format established by Outreach for Hope.  Please check with the Outreach for Hope office to verify the location and timing of the Grant Application Forms.

Funding requests are submitted to the Outreach for Hope office.  All grants are reviewed by an Allocation Review Committee which develops a grant distribution recommendation.  The final approval for grant distribution is made by the Outreach for Hope Board of Directors.

Outreach funding has included seed money to initiate the work of Neighborhood Ministers, homework help programs, creative arts camp, “Good Samaritan” money, meal programs, development of worship designed to draw in the community, and creative Bible study programs, to name a few examples.

Congregations can apply for general support or seek funding for a specific program of the congregation.

Individuals can participate in a variety of ways including cash gifts, stock transfers, bequests and memorials.

Congregations participate through special mission and outreach gifts, annual distribution of endowment mission funds, partnership programs and capitol campaign percentage gifts.  Learn more at Ways to Give.
